Write a short note on the role of the rustic characters in Hardy's novel"Far from the Madding Crowd"

Answer>
In the Thomas Hardy's fourth major success novel Far From The Madding Crowd ,the minor rustics characters can be identified by their general function, their rural occupation, their class, their peculiar humour, colloquial speech and more significantly their values. If in The Mayor of Casterbridge and in Jude the Obscure ,the minor rustics reveal the less alternative aspects of human nature,in Far From The Madding Crowd  ,the rustics characters represents aptly human nature at its most felicious, and a society which has attained harmony between one man and another based on a respect for each individual's humanity and harmony between man and his physical environment character. The rustics like Joseph Poorgress,Jan Coggan, Henry Fray,C ainy Ball,Laban Toll and so on add much humour which later serves as a relief  otherwise serious and sad story.

The rustics also provide the materials of cosmic relief,in the cause of the noval , Gabriel immediately made welcome to the Malhouse and then identified by Master. The Master's son and the grandson continue the conversation recalling acquaintances known to them and to Gabriel. Gabriel has been invited to drink from the 'God -forgive - me' mug and offers bread and beacon. This life is full of fun and gay. There is no malice no rivalry. The warm atmosphere of Malhouse preside over by the incredibly ancient Malster is a glowing image of a full quantity of life.

Generally speaking, these minor characters are all ignorant, illiterate, orthodox and superstitious. They believes in ghost, black magic, witches and Christian charity in the superstition," no moon,no man". But having those, the rustics people not created pandemonium condition but utopiatic atmosphere. They are all happy their jolly vernacular speech and vista nature.

Being part of a group, they are seldom individualized. They are    characterized by some caricatured personal idiosyncrasies. Henry Fray insists on 'H-e-n-e-r-y' , Joseph with his blushes,Andrew Pandel with his stamina , Laban Toll bullied by his wife.Joseph Poorgrass is a self conscious, modest and blissful person . He points out that he does not possess the courage to look at the face of Bathsheba.Jan Coggan possess an amusing view of equality where sharing of liquor is concerned . Jocob Smallbury ,a sixty-five years old fellow, having dropped a piece of beacon in the dust ,advises Gabriel in jolly mood.

Though the rustic characters , Hardy very nicely portrait some interesting characters- Joseph feels good when he drink,so drop the car of Fanny Robin's coffin ,he drowned into the sea of drink with his friend. As a result , creating a huge problem in the life of Bathsheba.old Malster play critics upon Bathsheba when said ,"her for buying everything new and not being satisfied with her dead uncle's things".

The rustics like Coggan and Liddy serves another kind of function, each in a different manner.Coggan in quite a good confident for Gabriel Oak.He advises caution over Troy ,aids him in the chase after Bathsheba and finally helps with the wedding preparations.Liddy ,on the other hand,is a disastrous, confident for Bathsheba. She encourage her mistress in the jolly of the valentine and is anxious, through fear the life of Bathsheba.

In this way the rustics characters play a vital role in Hardy's novel . Without their presence, its a statue of sadness world. It would be surely a scarcity of realism , information, comic interest and dramatic progress of the plot.so this novel is appreciated by the role of rustics characters.
