"The Fiend looked up, and knew
His mounted scale aloft: Nor more;
but fled Murmuring, and with him fled the
shades of night"-----Explain
(Paradise Lost )
These quoted lines are extracted from the last two lines of Paradise Lost Book- 4 written by Puritan poet John Milton . When Satan is ready to fight with Gabriel in paradise but that time, the appearance in the sky of a pair of Golden Scale and Satan recognises the sign and flies off.
Satan, after completed his evil planning to establish his kingdoms on Paradise, the house of Adam and Eve take rest in paradise as many form such as Cormorant, a bird of a prey; lion, tiger and ultimately caught up as the form of toad by Gabriel's guard's while tempted Eve at night. Gabriel who questions Satan about his motives for entering Eden. Satan crafting replies that those in Hell seek a better place. He had come to scout on earth but not to do evil. After further discussion, Gabriel accuses Satan of shifting argument and threatens to drag the demon back to hell in chains if he does not immediately return on his own. In anger, Satan rises to his full height still magnificent even though diminished. Gabriel and his troops prepare for battle but get cut short by holding up a pair of Golden Scale in the sky. Both Satan and Gabriel recognise the symbol and the power behind it. Satan especially realizes that he cannot overcome God's will and flies away into the night.
In the finale of Book -IV ,as Satan confronts Gabriel and a small Phalanx of Angels has received much criticism from commentators. Milton's descriptions of Satan as he confronts the Angels, emphasize that devil's power and magnificent even in his corrupted state. The scene seems to call for a battle but Milton instead produced a Deux Ex Machina in the form of the Golden Scale in heaven. The instant drama of the moment fizzles with the image of the scale and Satin's inglourious departure.
