The Sound and The Fury is a Psychological cum stream of consciousness Novel



Psychological problem is the topmost problem of most of people, they are try to understand what happens actually in one's mind and how to solve the problem of it. This question's solution is The Sound and the Fury by the American Famous Novelist William Faulkner. The Novel does not have any specific plot because Psychological problem has not any structure but the only flow of thoughts and their reactions. The Novelist for the first time in American Literature mixed the exact and perfect technique " Stream of Consciousness" that is perfect for a Psychological Novel. Psychological Novel deals with thought, memories and reactions and does not flow the structure of plot.


Jason Compson III - An alcoholic and the head of the Compson family.

Caroline Compson- An Hypochondriac woman and the wife of Jason Compson III.

Benjy - A mentally handicapped boy of the Compson family.

Jason Compson III:

The owner of the Compson family, a cynical and detached person, despite cynicism, he maintains notions of gentlemanliness and family honour. Mr, Compson is unconcerned with it in practice and acts indifferent greatly upsets Quentin and Caddy. Mr. Compson dismisses Quentin's concern about Caddy's pregnancy and tells his son not to take it seriously. Compson's Psychological thought about only restoring his family status is responsible for destroying the life of his children and he also dies of alcoholism.


Caroline Compson:

The mother of four Compson Children but her Hypochondriac preoccupied mentality was unable to care properly of her children except Jason. She is preoccupied with the honor of the Bascomb family name like her husband. Caroline was given all responsibility to take her children to Dilsey, a maid servant of her family. Her


Benjy

He is a mentally handicapped youngest son of the Compson family. Benjy can't understand any abstract concepts but his stream of consciousness always alerts the presence of anything bad, wrong and out of place. Caddy is the only source to interpret on whom Benjy depends to utter. He is able to sense Quentin's suicide which is thousand miles away of Harvard and sense of Caddy's promiscuity and loss of virginity. He also witnessed the Compson family's progressing decline.


Jason IV:

He is another kind of boy of the Compson family, and the only affectionate child of Mrs.Compson. His fixation to Caddy is based on bitterness and a desire to get Caddy in trouble. Jason not only rejects familial love but also romantic love as well as he hates all women fervently and thus cannot date or marry. Jason's only romantic satisfaction as an adult comes from a prostitute in Memphis. He also manipulates to steal money from Miss Quentin.


Quentin:

He is the only eldest responsibility boy of the Compson family to live up to the family's past greatness and prestige. He is a man of action as well as a student of Harvard. The Souther code defines order and chaos with Quentin's life. He showed his affection to Caddy but when he learned of Caddy's promiscuity and wanted to guide his father, he was shocked that his father does not care about the southern code or the shame of Caddy's conduct. He was very obsessed to understand that his father have disregarded the code that gives order and meaning of his life. Ultimately he is driven to despondency and eventually suicide.

Caddy:

The only daughter of the Compson family and very lovely and affectionate for her brothers, she takes the role of mother for Benjy. But the story takes ture when she is involved in promiscuity and feels guilty because it upsets Benjy so much and the cause of Quentin's despair over her conduct. She rejected the southern code that has defined her family's History and preoccupied Quintin's mind. Her Psychological stream of consciousness always alerts her but she rejects in the name of love but when she is pregnant by lover Dalton Ames that time she understands the mistakes and marries a banker, Herbert but later he divorced her on hearing the news of pregnancy and the results was illegitimate daughter- Miss Quentin.



Miss Quentin:

She is the illegitimate daughter of Caddy and only the New generation

 lone member of the Compson's family. And she also is the replica of her mother. Miss Quentin repeats Caddy's early sexual awakening and promiscuity but she doesn't feel guilty for her actions. She is more mature and headstrong than Caddy and she eventually succeeds in recovering her stolen money.


Conclusion:

Stream of consciousness always makes a sense of alertness to do right or wrong. Every Characters of the Compson family are involved with psychological problems that flow in the name of Stream of Consciousness. All Characters were fighting in their own Psychological thoughts and reactions through family responsibilities, honour, own existence, guilt, despair but their sound and fury signifying nothing but the hollowness of life. The Novelist very aptly presented the novel The Sound And The Fury in the flow of stream of consciousness to make a Psychological Novel through the thought and reactions of the Compson family.
