1)Who wrote the Novel Crime And Punishment?

Russian Stream of Consciousness (Poor Folk) writer Fiyodor Dostoevsky wrote this Novel "Crime And Punishment" that was published in 1866 in the literary journal The Messenger. It is the Second successful Novel following his return from ten years of exile in Siberia.


2)What are the Major Characters of the Novel?

* Raskolnikov: The main fictional and intelligent character of the Novel and Split Personality Disorder person who killed Alyona Ivanovna, an old pawnbroker and her sister.


* Sonya: The Daughter of a drunkard named Semyon Marmeladov. She forced into prostitution to help her poor family but helped to confess of Raskolnikov's guilty for salvation.


* Porfiry Petrovich:The head of the Investigation Department in charge who knew that Raskolnikov is the murderer of the pawnbroker without solid evidence but the help of Sonya, He confessed Raskolnikov to save his life from Capital Punishment.

In the Novel, biblical allusion is used primarily to support the theme of redemption. As Marmeladov describes the pain his alcoholism has caused his family, 

The Cross represents both faith and suffering. Sonya gives Raskolnikov 'A Cross' before he confesses, symbolizing both the burden of suffering and the redemption promised by surrendering to faith. Raskolnikov embodies the author's belief that salvation is possible only through atonement.
