1) “And it’s impossible for me not to marry.” – Why is the speaker so interested in marriage? Whom does he want to marry and why? [3+1+2 = 6] [H.S. = 2020]
OR
*Why did Lomov think about taking a decision about getting married? Whom did he want to marry? Why? [3+1+2 = 6] [H.S. = 2016]

*Lomov came with a proposal to marry Natalya Stepanovna. What logic does he
give for his decision? [6] [H.S. = 2019]
Ans) This quoted line is taken from The Onc-act play "The Proposal" written by Russian Playwright Anton Chekhov. Here, Lomov is the speaker.
Lomov made a decision about getting married.and obviously there were some reasons. He thought he was already 35 years old. According to him, it was a critical age for marriage otherwise he would be unable to marry. He wanted to live a simple and regular life. He had several nervous disorders because of Palpitations. So, without wasting any time looking for a life partner, that is Natalya and he decided to get married.
Lomov wanted to marry Natalya Stepanovna, the daughter of Chubukov and a neighbour of Lomov. Because she was an excellent housekeeper, very beautiful and well educated. Lomov was totally satisfied with the qualities of Natalya.
2) “I have been hoping for it for a long time.” – Who is the speaker? What does ‘it’
refer to? How did the speaker come to know about it? What more did the speaker
say in this context? [1+1+1+3 = 6] [H.S. = 2020]
Ans) This statement said by Chubukov from the Comedy Play "The Proposal" written by Anton Chekhov
‘It’ refers to the marriage proposal of Lomov to Natalya Stepanovna, daughter of Chubukov.
The speaker Chubukov realized about 'it' when Lomov, in his evening dress, informed that he wanted to propose to her daughter for marriage.
Hearing the marriage proposal from the mouth of Lomov, Chubukov became crazy with happiness. He replied to Lomov that he always loved him like his own son. Before it, Chubukov thought Lomov was the most suitable man for his daughter. He was so glad that he behaved like a mad man . For that, he went to call his daughter to inform the good news in the wrong direction
3) “Go there, a merchant comes for his goods.” – Who said this and to whom?
Who is the merchant? What is referred to as goods? In what way does it bring out
the attitude of the person and the society at the time? [2+1+1+2 = 6] [H.S. = 2018]
Ans) Chubukov said this to his daughter, Natalya Stepanovna in Anton Chekhov’s Comedy play ‘The Proposal’.
Here, as a merchant is referred to Lomov by Chubukov's indirect way.
Natalya is referred to here as ‘goods’ by his father's business type mentality.
By these words, Chubukov proved that a daughter is a burden over not only him but also contemporary society in which marriage is not a bonding of families but a business deal in which Grooms are like the merchants and the Brides are treated as their goods.
