1) “The humming insects don’t disturb his rest” – Who rest and where? Why is his rest not disturbed by the insects? [1+2+3 = 6] [H.S. – 2020]
Ans. This quoted line taken from Arthur Rimbaud’s poem ‘Asleep in the valley’. Here, A young soldier rests in the valley.
The young soldier rests with open-mouthed in the midst of a small green valley where a slow stream flows and surrounded by mountains. He lies on the heavy undergrowth that serves as a soft bed and fern grows beneath his head that serves as a pillow.
The humming insects don’t disturb the young soldier's rest because he is in his eternal rest. Nobody can not break his eternal rest in mortal life. War took away his happy life to shoot death by two bullets and the young soldier took a permanent rest from the tragic world.
2) “A soldier, very young, lies open-mouthed,” – Who is the soldier referred to here? Narrate in your own words how the soldier lies in the valley? [2+4 = 6] [H.S. – 2016]
Ans. This quoted line taken from 'Asleep in the Valley’ by war poet Arthur Rimbaud. Here, the soldier is the victim of war who took eternal rest in the valley.
The young soldier rests with open-mouthed in the midst of a small green valley where a slow stream flows and surrounded by mountains. He lies on the heavy undergrowth that serves as a soft bed and fern grows beneath his head that serves as a pillow. His smiling face was compared with the smile of an innocent infant. The humming insects were trying to awaken the soldier but he was sleeping eternally and keeping one hand on his breast in the open sky under the sunlight.
3) How does the poet express the futility of war through the poem ‘Asleep in the Valley’? What message does he want to convey? [4+2 = 6] [H.S. – 2018]
Ans. The anti-war poet Arthur Rimbaud, in the course of his poem, ‘Asleep in the Valley’ revealed the futility of war. The poem began with a beautiful panorama of nature in which a young soldier was lying in the green valley and took a rest but readers were surprised when they knew the soldier was dead with two bullets. Two bullets had snatched not only his life but also his dreams and hopes. He was trapped in a futile war.
The poet wants to share a great message throughout the poem that War is nothing but the shadow of life that haunts the innocent mankind like the young soldier. So,this brutality and bloodshed by the name of war should be stopped.
4) Justify the title of the poem ‘Asleep in the Valley’ [6] [H.S. – 2015]
Ans. The title of the poem ‘Asleep in the Valley’ by Anti-war poet Arthur Rimbaud draws our attention with irony and appropriate theme.
"Asleep in the Valley" is a kind of valley in which natural panoramas are enriched by the touch of nature but in which the tragic death of a young soldier makes the title totally ironic because at first of the poem, readers thought the young soldier is takes rest and the valley that provides comfortable accommodations for his peaceful sleep. But the last line of the poem changes the whole concept of the theme. The young soldier is not sleeping but sleeping forever with the two bullets. So the title of the poem is appropriate thematically as well as ironically.
