As the greatest dramatist and highest sonneteer William Shakespeare tragedy Macbeth  is anchored upon the supernatural and tragic atmosphere, it is obvious that images and symbols play a vital role as far as the theme of the play is concerned. An image denotes a word picture when any simple thing is used to represent something it becomes a symbol . Macbeth is incircled with images and symbols such as Foul and Fair; light and darkness ; blood , dress and so on.The language and the imagery served The main theme of evil and its components -temptation , corruption, murder and retribution.


 Light and darkness appears to be recurring images in the play when the play opens there is hardly any trace of light. Most of the scenes of the play are set in the darkness.So, darkness stand for evil murder, sorrow, murder and inhumanity. There is a contrast between good and evil through the contrast between light and darkness, hell and heaven. Duncan is murdered in the night also Lady Macbeth in the sleepwaking scene was in night .

Blood is the key symbol in the play from the appearance of the "bloody surgent" in the second scene of the play to the last scenes blood is everywhere .It highten the atmosphere of evil and supernatural thrilled. Macbeth' sword "smoked with bloody execution"" the dagger marked with gouls of blood" the reputations of "bloody business" etc.  speak on the behalf of the bloody atmosphere. The smell of blood appears first Macbeth later  Lady Macbeth ,too fails to bear with the smell of blood. The word 'blood' occurred almost hundred times.
 The dagger symbolise the murder of Duncan  Dress is another image used in the play when Rosse calls Macbeth 'Thane of Cowdor' Macbeth said "why do you dress me in borrowed robes; gardening rather hoticultures and plantly" when Duncan thanks, Banquo quoted" Thane if I grow/ the harvest is your own'. The witches cry "fair is foul and foul is fair' strike the keynote and serve a great purpose for it , suggest appearently  the weather but later it comes to the reader's mind that it is about how the fear and valiant Macbeth turned into a foul one and hellkite.

 The baby image associated with the milk is used by Shakespeare. Lady Macbeth characterized Macbeth's nature as the milk of human nature.
