Write a note on University Wits


University Wits are none but the works of great intellectual scholars of Oxford and Cambridge University.They flourished Dramas during the Elizabethan Era and obviously before Macbeth Writer Shakespeare. The University Wits is a phrase that was made famous by late 16th century English Playwrights and Pamphleteers who were educated from Oxford and Cambridge but this term was coined by George Saintsbury. Christopher Marlowe, Robert Greene, Thomas Nashe are the scholars of Cambridge and John Lyly, Thomas Lodge, George Peele are the wits of Oxford University. Thomas Kyd was not of University but he also counted as a University Wits. They were usually actors and dramatists. University Wits reached the top point of the drama and gave a sensational stamina to boost up the thinking mind of the audience as well as readers.


Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593):

He is the evergreen shining star of University Wits. He shook the drama World to write top most Plays, mainly Tragic Play. Tamburlaine (1590), Dr. Faustus (1604), Edward II (1592),The Jaw of Malta are the evergreen Classic plays that show life and reality, corruption and evil thought, power and position. He is the creator of Black Verse that was given another task of the play. His Dramas took a fast mood and reached the highest peak by his outstanding creativity. Most of the critics compared him with Shakespeare and even said if Marlowe did not die at a young age,he would take the position of Shakespeare.


John Lyly:

The Euphuistic style of prose writing is given a unique turn of drama by the hand of John Lyly. Most dramas are based on classical themes and stories that help readers and audience to know more about classical stories. He wrote eight plays in all. Woman in the Moon, Campaspe, Gallathea, Midas, The Man in the Moon, Sappho and Phaon. Lyly is also famous as a comic playwright specially Romantic Comedy and he added the qualities of delicacy, grace and charming atmosphere to Plays.


George Peele: 

another university wits who used various techniques to Dramas that was none but George Peele. He wrote both Tragedies and Comedies. The Old Wives is such a famous play that it was the first English Play of dramatic criticism. Poetic attainment given more clarity of his Plays. Arraignment of Paris, The Old Wives, The Battle of Alcazar, The Love of King David, Fair Bathsheba are the famous dramas in the name of George Peele.


Robert Greene:

He is not only a famous playwright but also Pamphleteer and Novelist. He is a University Wits who criticized Shakespeare for Plagiarism as " The upstart crow,beautified with our feathers" in his Pamphlet " Greene's Groats-Worth of Wit". His Plot arrangement to drama which gives a new twist and Love story is the central part of his plays. He also wrote both Tragedies and Comedies to satisfy his audience and readers. Friar Become, James IV, The Comical History of Alphonsus are the famous dramas of Robert Greene.


Thomas Lodge and Thomas Nashe:

They are also University Wits but not popular like other University Wits. But Rosalynd is the important work of Thomas Lodge and that was the inspiration for Shakespeare's Play As You Like It. Thomas Kyd:

University Wits did not complete without the work of Thomas Kyd. He was not the Scholar of University but he also called University Wits for his One famous successful drama, The Spanish Tragedy (1582-92). He brought the Revenge Theme on the stage and became the landmark in English Tragedy. He used the Senecan Model and popularised the thunder and blood elements in his drama.

It is true, if University Wits does not contribute their famous dramas with beautiful themes, witty plot structure, Techniques to impress audience and readers and various elements to English dramas, Shakespeare and other contemporary dramatists do not create the famous Plays. University Wits are the core level on where  other dramatists stand. Elizabethan dramas are not  complete without University Wits.
